Banif History


Banif - Banco Internacional do Funchal, SA, later to become Banif Financial Group, was set up on the 15th of January 1988, on the initiative of a group of founding investors, in which Horácio da Silva Roque took a leading role. The Bank had share capital of 11 billion PTE, and took over the assets and liabilities of the former Caixa Económica do Funchal, including accrued losses of 10 billion PTE, to be written off over three years.

The first Chairman of the Directors of Banif - Banco Internacional do Funchal is Dr. Raul de Almeida Capela, who heads a board comprising of Dr. Joaquim Filipe Marques dos Santos, Dr. Serafim Martins de  Pinho and Dr. Fernando Mário Teixeira de Almeida, who was replaced by Dr. José Marques de Almeida at the end of the year.

The Bank has 19 public offices, including the Head Office in Funchal, the Central Offices in Lisbon and a branch in Porto.
